You’re approaching the end of your three weeks of prayer and fasting and your prayer life has intensified. You are freer than you were a few weeks ago and you’re looking beyond your own needs and asking God to work in your family, your workplace, your church and your neighbourhood.
You actually have the ability to change your entire city. A small group of disciples who walked with Jesus a couple of centuries ago sure did! They carried a message of hope to their cities; subsequently, much of the Western world built its culture on Judeo-Christian values. Imagine you and your group of friends from church who have a passion for your community changing and influencing your city. You CAN!
Why don’t you take some time today and pray for your city? Love your suburb. Lift up its leaders and ask God to bless them and guide them. Believe God will open doors of influence and opportunity for you to speak into the lives of your city councilmen and women and elected officials. You have a voice in your community.
Over time, your care and influence will impact those around you and spill over into every area of your community. Through loving it well, you can affect change.
“Seek peace and well-being for the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf; for in its peace (well-being) you will have peace” (Jeremiah 29:7 AMP).

Joseph’s story is one of rags to riches – a story of a guy who went from a pit to the palace. Joseph constantly sought after, honoured, and devoted himself to God no matter what circumstances surrounded him. Miraculously, Joseph found favour with Pharaoh and became second in command in the most powerful nation in the world at the time.
When you, like Joseph, devote yourself to God, you can expect doors to open in your life. You can have influence with those around you. Whether you are a corporate executive or a stay-at-home-mum, you can make a difference for others. People want what you have when they see the fruit of the spirit in your life. Your voice can bring the right word at the right time to encourage someone. Or, to give Godly advice in a difficult circumstance.
God, I want to know you as Joseph knew you. I pray that you will open doors for me to have influence with the people around me. Turn impossible situations in my life into miracles that will testify to your greatness! Give me influence and a voice in my city that will bring honour to you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

As our devotions and fast draw to a close, let’s not lose sight of what God is doing “in” us while also working “through” us. Jesus reminds us that we are to be salt and light to our world.
Salt flavours, enhances, and makes palatable the foods we eat. It is not intended to stay in the shaker; in the same way, we aren’t to keep what God is doing to ourselves. Rather, we are to influence the world around us.
Bland, tasteless living can turn into purpose, hope and freedom in Christ once our zest is spread around!
The warmth of light is soothing and comforting. It illuminates dark spaces and brings forth life. Jesus reminds us to let the light within us shine out so that others can find comfort, peace, and direction through Christ.
The more we grow in Christ and allow him to work in us, means Christ can be revealed through us to influence others. Imagine living in such a way that a beautiful, loving, gracious Saviour’s reflection outshines our fleshly tendencies to fall short. Our kids will see Jesus through our marriages. Our coworkers and colleagues will testify about Jesus because of the way we carry ourselves at work. Imagine reaching people for Christ without “saying” a word!
Thank you, dear Jesus, for putting the challenge before me to live as salt and light to this world. Our world SO NEEDS you. May my life be a reflection of your pure light; and, please help me to add flavour and spice to my world for you! I pray for everyone in my world who doesn’t know you personally. Use me to influence them for you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
